I grew up in New York City. There and later in Boston my education focused on both practical art and art history, first at City College of New York, then the Fashion Institute of Technology, and finally at Tufts University, where I received a Master of Arts degree. I’ve also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; and have taken workshops with various masters, including Frank Federico and Albert Handell.

Through the years, I’ve worked in a number of art media, and after raising a family and working as a writer/editor, I finally focused on painting, first in oils, now in pastels. The immediacy of the process of pastel paintings inspires me and the nuances and permutations of color that can be achieved in the medium fascinate and never fail to surprise.

Although I claim inheritances from several major late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century art movements, I believe my greatest influences come from Abstract Expressionism and Lyrical Expressionism. Two of my many art heroes are Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn...

For me, color is key. Color relationships are paramount, as are the shapes and the mysterious spaces they create. In my abstracts, I enjoy experimenting with perspectives that hide and evade. I play with line and try to capture their elusive quality by making them appear and disappear and, in doing so, remind the viewer of past marks I’ve made—the painting’s history therefore becomes an active participant in its present. In addition to nonobjective paintings, I’m also interested in landscapes and still lifes, in which the playfulness of light- and shadow-shapes takes the major role.
