Pat Ross Marx
Two Locations, One Passion
Pat Ross Marx's love of pastels allows her to create abstract works that capture the essence of the two places she knows best.
The two environments I work from most often are very different. Miami, Florida has been my home for almost thirty years and we have a second home in Chatham, on Cape Cod. We're very fortunate because we feel we have the best of both worlds. The colors, light and atmosphere are unique to each location. The ocean is a major presence in both locales, but the local colors are profoundly distinctive. The cold icy blue of the north Atlantic is a contrast to the warm, azure blue and the palm trees of the south. It is these two locations where I find my inspiration to create and give life to my work. My paintings are evocative of dream like dunes, cliffs, sea and landscapes. I'm interested in drawing the viewer into the texture depth, detail, and lush colors rather than eliciting a direct interpretation to a 'scene'. I find abstraction and non-representational work to be challenging and stimulating since it's not trying to portray or copy nature directly but rather capture the feeling of a sense of place or time.
Pat Ross Marx is the former Director of Education and Community Outreach for Miami-Dade County's (Florida) nationally recognized Art in Public Places Program. During her tenure, she received the Sarah T. Maddox Award, the highest honor from the Miami-Dade Art Education Association, and the Art Educator of the Year Award from the Children's Cultural Coalition, Inc. in Miami. Formerly an adjunct instructor in the Art Education Department at Florida International University, she has also taught art to children and adults in public schools, museums, galleries, and workshops. For seven years she was the Volunteer Coordinator of the Baptist Hospital of Miami Artists Showcase, a quality juried outdoor art show with approximately 200 exhibiting artists.
Pat has studied pastels extensively since 1997, and feels it is a perfect medium for expressing the color, light, and beauty of nature, as well as to explore the discipline of non-objective work. Marx has exhibited in many local and national exhibits, achieving many awards. She has been an Honorable mention winner in the Pastel 1oo competition of Pastel Journal Magazine in 2008 and featured in the on-line magazine 'createbetterpaintings.com'.
